NAGASAKI REMEMBERS 70 YEARS OF NUCLEAR ATTACK WITH ADVOCACY OF PACIFISM

"Many people wonder if the pacifist principle of Japan, which prevents us to get involved in any war, is being attacked by this initiative," said the mayor in reference to Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution.
"We must never abandon this principle, on which was built the prosperity of Japan today. We can not forget the tragic memories left in the war," Taue said in his "Declaration for Peace".
Abe and his government face the opposition criticism and a growing rejection of the population for his pacifist reinterpretation of this article of the Constitution which will allow for the first time in 68 years that its Self-Defense Forces (Army) operate abroad and defend allies in the event of attack.
The United States launched the first nuclear attack in history on the city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and three days later dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, leading to Japan's surrender on August 15 and ended the Second World War.

"I appeal to young people: listen to the word of the oldest and think about what you can do for peace," said the mayor of Nagasaki, Tomihisa Taue, before a crowd of 6,700 Japanese, including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the American ambassador in Japan, Caroline Kennedy, among representatives of 75 countries.
The mayor invited "the US president, Barack Obama, and representatives from all countries possessing nuclear weapons" to visit Nagasaki.
