Ukraine's president has urged opposition leaders to distance themselves from "radical elements who seek bloodshed and conflict", after the country's worst violence for 70 years. Mr Yanukovych said if they were unwilling to do so, they must "admit that they are supporting radicals".
He warned that aides were urging him to take "harsher measures" but insisted that he believed there was a better way to resolve the crisis.

The Health Ministry has confirmed that at least 35 people have been killed so far in the violence in Kiev, and another 505 are injured, with 292 of them hospitalized.
Anti-government forces armed with hunting rifles took up sniper positions in a downtown Kiev hotel on Thursday, overlooking protesters and police clashing in Maidan Square below. Police marksmen targeted gunmen appearing in the windows as the two groups exchanged live fire.

Approximately 1,000 demonstrators gathered on Prague's Wenceslas Square Thursday evening to express their anger at the ongoing events in Ukraine. The crowd lit candles in the shape of an Orthodox cross, and repeatedly called on Europe's leaders to support the demonstrators in Kiev by imposing sanctions on the Ukrainian government.

The presidential mace is made of gold-covered and weighs 750 grams. It consists of two hollow parts: a handle and a top, the so-called apple. They contain a “secret” – a three-edged damask blade bearing engraved “Omnia revertutur” motto (Everything returns – from Latin.)
The top of the mace is adorned with golden ornamental medallions and crowned with an enameled and gemmed golden wreath. The mace used to have 64 gold-mounted stones (emeralds and garnets). The blade can be extracted from the mace with the help of the button, decorated with a Yakut emerald. The mace is kept in a mahogany carved coffer.
