St. Baptist Church of Military - Olinda PE - Brazil

St. Baptist Church of Military | It was the first temple of the Benedictines of Olinda in 1581. Dutch escaped the fire in 1631, to be located outside the gates of the city and serve as headquarters. Its interior is simple, keeping the chapel and the altar, where the niche the patron Saint John the Baptist.

It was built in the second half of the sixteenth century. According to records, the building housed, in 1592, when the Benedictines arrived in Pernambuco, the first Benedictine church in Brazil and one of the oldest in the country. Because it is situated outside the city gates and have served as barracks for the invaders, the church escaped the fire caused by the Dutch in 1631.

It is the only temple built under the invocation of St. John in Pernambuco. Its interior is simple, as were the colonial churches. The church consists of a nave, choir, the chancel, which was to meet the original image of St. John the Baptist, removed and stored elsewhere. Presents a frontispiece sober, reminding the Cathedral, with one tower and a coat of arms above the central door.
