I visited China this week to look at some truly amazing toilets. I know it sounds silly, but the toilets I saw at the Reinvented Toilet Expo in Beijing are incredible feats of technology.

Sanitation is one of the most important issues our foundation works on. Over one billion people still practice open defecation. Inadequate sanitation kills half a million kids every year, largely because pathogens from human waste make their way into the water supply.

The toilets I saw this week use clever innovations to dispose of waste safely without the need for a sewer. Many of them are self-powered, and some even turn waste into useful byproducts like clean water for washing hands or fertilizer for crops. They could make communities safer places to live and help millions of people live healthier lives.
