Jequitibá - White Tree

Common name comes from the Tupi Jequitibá, and one is facilitating pronunciation yigiquityba, hich translate as "tree-stem-hard". For others, original sound would jyquyty'ba with the same meaning.

Another school says that the name came from the corruption of the Tupi YIKI-t-YBA, as he was known by the Indians and means "tree of tapered fruit" (Trees ... r 1992)

Etymology: The generic name Cariniana is a tribute to Prince Eugene of Savoy - Carignan, which subsidized the travel Giovanni Casaretto to Brazil in 1839 and 1840; estrelensís the specific name is a likely reference to the "Saw of Star", in the state of Rio de Janeiro, type locality of this species (Reitz, 1981).

Medicinal: In folk medicine is widely used as infusion of the leaves in the treatment of rashes, especially those accompanied by fever. Remedies prepared with the roots, and are used for the aforementioned clinical conditions, are also used in hepatitis and both the leaves as the roots of I. cairica, have a purgative action, and there are reports of the use of this species as antidiarrheal and antissifilítico , anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic. It has proven antimicrobial and antioxidant activity.

Ornamental: Like most plants of this kind, has showy flowers, in this case lilacina morning or color, ideal for fences and trellises, forming dense tangles.

Other: Its essential oil showed larvicidal activity against Culex tritaeniorhynchus, aegytpi Aedes, Anopheles stephensi and Culex quinquefasciatus. Has allelopathic activity against weeds of crops.
