Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, Tiradentes (Treasury Pombal, baptized on November 12, 1746 - Rio de Janeiro, April 21, 1792) was a dentist, drover, miner, merchant, military and political activist who served in colonial Brazil (1530-1815), more specifically in the captaincy of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. In Brazil, it is recognized as a martyr of the Minas Conspiracy, civic patron of Brazil, also patron of the Military Police of the states and national hero.
The day of his execution, April 21, is a national holiday. The mining town of Tiradentes, ancient town of Sao Jose do Rio das Mortes, was renamed in his honor.
