Ministro Gilmar Mendes diz que a sociedade precisa discutir o sistema prisional do país

A prisão de condenados do mensalão deu relevância a um tema que pouco mobiliza o país: as péssimas condições dos presídios brasileiros.

Na semana passada, a coluna conversou com o ministro Gilmar Mendes, do STF (Supremo Tribunal Federal), sobre o assunto. Quando ocupou a presidência da corte, ele visitou presídios em todos os Estados do país e chegou a soltar 22 mil pessoas que já tinham cumprido suas penas e mofavam no cárcere.

It was during the 27 years in prison that Mandela, who died on Thursday (5; 2013), has become known worldwide. Even isolated, he was the leading voice against Apartheid.

On Robben Island, Nelson Mandela was prisoner 46664. In a tiny cell, sleeping on the floor, no bathroom. Was allowed to receive one visit per year. 30 minutes.

And was working there, breaking stones, which Mandela became. Earned the respect of the guards. Of all prisoners, only he was not chained. And, hidden, wrote an autobiography.

About freedom, Mandela once said: "To be free is not merely abandon own chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others."
