"Durante muitos anos, o único recurso farmacológico para o alcoolismo foi essa droga traiçoeira: o dissulfiram, conhecido popularmente como Antabuse [ÁLCOOL + ANTABUSE = SENSAÇÃO DE MORTE]. (...)

No mesmo período em que a medicina desenvolveu antibióticos, medicamentos para controlar hipertensão, diabetes, doenças cardiovasculares e tantas outras, a crença ridícula de que a cura do alcoolismo era simples questão de força de vontade impediu qualquer avanço nessa área.

Tanto é verdade que os Alcoólicos Anônimos representavam a única esperança para os que desejavam livrar-se do álcool. Situação humilhante para os médicos: um grupo de auto-ajuda conseguir fazer muito mais do que a medicina inteira. (...)

Como resultado de intenso trabalho com animais de laboratório, em 1994 foi aprovado o segundo medicamento para o tratamento do alcoolismo: a naltrexona, droga que bloqueia no cérebro os receptores opióides existentes nos neurônios responsáveis pelos efeitos euforizantes do álcool.

A terceira droga aprovada, o acamprosato, bloqueia a liberação de um neurotransmissor (glutamato), produzido em quantidades excessivas pela exposição continuada a doses altas de álcool. Embora reduza a intensidade dos sintomas da crise de abstinência, os resultados do acamprosato têm sido contraditórios.

Nos últimos anos, a compreensão dos mecanismos moleculares que levam à liberação dos neurotransmissores envolvidos nas sensações de prazer, euforia, agressividade e dependência química associadas ao álcool, possibilitou a descoberta de novos tratamentos.

Em estudo publicado em 2003, na revista “The Lancet”, o topiramato, usado em casos de epilepsia, enxaqueca e distúrbios alimentares, demonstrou ser capaz de reduzir o número de drinques diários e de aumentar os dias de abstinência.

No ano passado, foi demonstrado que a vareniclina, droga de aprovação recente para os que decidem livrar-se do cigarro, reduz a sofreguidão por bebidas alcoólicas em ratos tornados dependentes. É provável que tenha efeito semelhante em seres humanos.

Ao lado dessas drogas que usam como alvo os neurotransmissores, têm ocorrido avanços significativos no estudo de outras que interferem com o mecanismo de estresse, responsável pelo abuso nos mais ansiosos.

É provável que, nos próximos cinco a dez anos, possamos oferecer aos que fazem uso nocivo do álcool, remédios eficazes que os ajudem a livrar-se da dependência. Talvez até surjam medicamentos que lhes realize o sonho de experimentar o prazer de um copo de vinho ou de um chope com os amigos, sem correr o risco de beber até cair na sarjeta."

José Aparecido era do clero da diocese de Santo Amaro. Luiz Antônio Cipolini fazia parte da diocese de São João da Boa Vista. Papa Francisco faz sua primeira nomeação de bispos brasileiros.

O Papa Francisco nomeou os sacerdotes José Aparecido Gonçalves de Almeida, de 53 anos, como bispo auxiliar de Brasília, e Luiz Antônio Cipolini, de 51 anos, como bispo de Marília, informou o Vaticano nesta quarta-feira (8).

A diocese de Marília tem superfície de 11.958 quilômetros quadrados e população de 711 mil pessoas, das quais 568 mil são católicas. Conta com 91 sacerdotes e 163 religiosos.
