Russian President Vladimir Putin hinted on Friday (1[/07/2016]) that his country could put troops closer to the Russian-Finnish border to Finland joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and called for measures to improve conflict prevention in the Baltic.
The Finnish Defence Forces "would become part of the military infrastructure of NATO, that the overnight would be the borders of the Russian Federation," Putin said after talks with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö.
"Do you think we keep everything as it is, our troops 1,500 kilometers away?".
The first visit of Putin to Finland since the outbreak of the crisis in Ukraine in 2014 came amid growing activities of Russia and NATO in the Baltic Sea region and the time the militarily neutral Finland and neighboring Sweden strengthen its cooperation with the alliance and a week of a NATO summit in Warsaw, Poland.
"Perhaps NATO fought soon with Russia until the last Finnish soldier," Putin said. "You need it? We do not. We do not want it. But it depends on you."
The airspace over the Baltic was the scene of a number of Russian and Western aircraft approaches in recent months, and the former Soviet states asked NATO to strengthen the air defenses in the region.
