Posted on 03/04/2014 The Pope signed Francisco on Thursday, 3 the order making Holy Father José de Anchieta, known as the Apostle of Brazil. It was during an audience with the prefect of the Congregation for Saints, Cardinal Angelo Amato. Reporting by Danusa Rego and Frederico Oliveira.

José de Anchieta, S.J., Spaniard (the Canarian son of a Basque family), called the "Apostle of Brazil" and founder, along with Portuguese Fr. Manuel da Nobrega, S.J., of several cities, including Saint Paul City.

In 1553, Anchieta was sent to the colony of Brazil to restore his health. After a perilous journey and a shipwreck, Anchieta and his small group arrived in São Vicente, the first village that had been founded in Brazil in 1534. There, he had his first contact with the Tapuia Indians living in the region. In the same year, Manuel da Nóbrega, a Portuguese Jesuit, sent 13 Jesuits including Anchieta, to climb the Serra do Mar to a plateau along the Tietê river that the Indians called Piratininga, where the Jesuits established a small missionary settlement and celebrated Mass for the first time on January 25, 1554.

That date is now celebrated as the anniversary of the founding of São Paulo. There, Anchieta started with his Jesuit colleagues the work of conversion, catechesis and education. He taught Latin to the Indians, began to learn their language, Old Tupi, and started compiling a dictionary and a grammar. The Jesuit College of São Paulo of Piratininga soon began to expand and to prosper as a population nucleus.
